We woke up at 8 because we had to be at ALIF with all of our bags by 9 o'clock when Arabic class started. Even though we gave ourselves the extra window, we still dropped the ball because we didn't account for how long it would take to drag all of our stuff down the street. As a result, the last of us rolled into class at 9:20 with most of us arriving at 9:15. Whoops! Anyways, after another great Arabic class, we had lunch at ALIF, where Youssef gave us sheets containing everyone's addresses and some information about our families.
I already posted about my family but some more general information.
1) Alice and Elle are living together and so are Tash and Meredith.
2) We are living in four neighborhoods around Fez:
- Baatha: Ariel. This is where the taxi stand is and where we meet to walk to school. It's on the edge of the Medina and the location of a fountain often used as a landmark
- Ziat: Andrew, Marissa, Alice & Elle. The neighborhood next to Baatha in the Medina. About a 7 minute walk from Baatha
- Raseif: Joe, Tash & Meredith. The neighborhood on the other side of Ziat. One of the sides of the medina.
- Ville Nouvelle: Christie, Ron. They live like 10 - 15 minutes from ALIF, which is in Ville Nouvelle
3) Marissa lives around the corner from me (like < 30 seconds) and Elle & Alice live around the corner from her (like 1 minute from me).
So after our Gender in the Medina class in the afternoon, we sat around the courtyard, waiting for our families to pick us up at 5. One by one, we were introduced to one of our parents and whisked away to our new homes. I was the 3rd to last one to be given to their family, but I was happy to meet my mother Fatima and little brother Driss. My host father was outside the walls of ALIF, so I was able to meet him then too and then we caught a cab to the medina. They live on the 3rd floor of an apartment building in a pretty spacious apartment, so it was a hassle to bring my luggage up all the stairs. After unpacking, Driss walked me to Batha so that I knew where to go when I left for school in the morning. Upon our return, Lotfi was home from class so I met him and then our family had dinner. After dinner, we chatted some and I ended up holing up in my room to finish the Life of Pi and to start the biography of Steve Jobs. It was a good first night with my family.
